Tower Road Academy

From frost to sunshine, roofs in the UK need to be able to withstand ever-changing weather extremes which Tower Road’s could no longer do. Both the multiple layer felt flat roof and the metal sheet pitched roof were in desperate need of repair and were leaking, causing disruption to the academy. The rooflights were also fragile and unstable because of UV degradation. 

The roof surveys also discovered that asbestos was present in the building which needed to be carefully controlled. This added to the challenges of working during a pandemic and delivering into site. As the school was situated in a housing estate, it meant that deliveries had to be timed to avoid congestion and disturbance to the neighbourhood at peak times. 

To ensure a roof that had a quality finish, the Icopal Technical Services team monitored the project with weekly site visits to offer assistance and guidance. By working in this way, it meant that if anything unexpected cropped up throughout the project, the experienced site technicians could support the contractors. 

This project had a unique combination of built up felt roofing and insulated single-ply roofing overlay, with the existing roof proving a difficult challenge due to the number of overlays it had received over the years, and the unique features dotted across the landscape of the roof. Truly, the collaborative efforts of Icopal and the roofing contractor contributed to an outstanding finish to the two roof areas of this project.

Tower Road Academy now has a roof that is modern, watertight, and installed with uncompromising quality to offer a long-term solution for the school. It also has additional insulation to ensure it meets current building regulations, while also reducing energy costs.
