As 2024 draws to a close, the annual Pitched Roofing Awards will be bringing together the very best of the industry to celebrate some remarkable projects.

This year, we’re thrilled to see seven projects included in the final shortlist that feature Redland, including: Stonebridge School, Tyldesley Library, John Clifford School, Shireland Academy, Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Peabody Estate and Houndsfield Primary School.

These projects showcase the incredible workmanship of the roofers involved in these projects, and also the full potential of Redland systems, not just to service the fundamental function of protecting buildings, but to deliver on performance, elevate aesthetics and breathe new life into existing buildings.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the projects that have been shortlisted for this year’s Pitched Roofing Awards and feature Redland systems.

Stonebridge School

Shortlisted for best use of a heritage roof

Stonebridge School

Built in 1898, Stonebridge School is a beautiful Grade II Listed building that is celebrated for its distinctive Queen Anne style detailing which delivers a striking appearance. The architectural style of the school reflects the high standards of school design from its period - something which adds to its significance.

While the school has served the local community for more than 120 years, it has recently suffered from factors of ageing - a factor which contributed to the decision to renovate the roof of the main school building, together with outbuildings including the caretaker’s house.

Using Rosemary Clay Classic plain tiles in Red, together with traditional craftsmanship from contractors, Breyer Group, the school has received a new lease of life, ensuring it can continue to play a key role in the community for decades and centuries to come.

Spire Murrayfield

Shortlisted for best use of concrete or clay tiles for a commercial project

Spire Murrayfield Hospital

As a state-of-the-art private hospital, Spire Murrayfield is committed to looking after the health of its patients. To do that, it must ensure that its hospital buildings are up to the task - which is why more than 4,000sqm of its pitched roofs were identified for replacement.

Contractors NRA Roofing were chosen to carry out the works, managing the challenges of a live hospital environment with the need to deliver to consistently high standards. To support seamless installation alongside long lasting performance, Mini Stonewold tiles in Breckland Brown were selected.

As a dependable concrete tile, the Mini Stonewolds facilitated straightforward installation for the experienced team, while the interlocking edges made for a uniform appearance across the project, as well as contributing towards its secure performance for decades to come.

Tyldesley Library

Shortlisted for best use of concrete or clay tiles for a commercial project

The Grade II listed Tyldesley Library is a local heritage landmark, noted for its Jacobean Renaissance architecture. Built in 1909, the library has been undergoing a complete refurbishment to ensure it can continue to serve the local community, with a full roof replacement forming a critical part of the project.

To bring the roof back to life, Redland Rosemary Clay Classic tiles were selected, allowing for a sensitive restoration which would meet the demands of performance and aesthetics.

The roofing works at Tyldesley Library were carried out by the Complete Roofing Systems team, who combined their first-class techniques with the Redland SpecMaster guarantee, ensuring the library can benefit from reliable performance for decades into the future.

John Clifford School

Shortlisted for best use of concrete or clay tiles for a commercial project

John Clifford School

The renovation of the 125-year-old John Clifford School roof is a leading example of how proven building materials, uncompromising expertise and experience in heritage works can come together to secure funding and breathe new life into an ageing school building.

Built in the late-1800s, high standards of construction meant only a few minor repair works had been required over the years. However, by 2024, a full roof refurbishment was necessary - and works were to be carried out by heritage specialists, NRA Roofing. But before works could commence, funding needed to be secured through the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF). This was made possible with the support of surveyors, YMD Boon who carried out conditions reports and led the CIF application process.

Upon completion of the project, a striking aesthetic was achieved at John Clifford School. Not only did this reflect the original appearance of the building, but it ensured the school would benefit from uncompromising performance for decades to come, providing an educational environment fit for modern learning.

Shireland Academy

Shortlisted for best use of slate for a commercial project

When a new roof was required to revitalise the building constructed in 1907, there were a handful of fundamental requirements: performance, durability and aesthetics. Part of the building’s architectural charm is its ten steeply pitched roofs, all of which required attention throughout the project.

That’s why Cambrian Slate was selected to preserve the architectural heritage of the school building, as well as ensuring stability and resilience against harsh weather conditions to deliver long-term reliability and performance.

The project at Shireland Academy was carried out by Central Group, who overcame the various complexities of the roof structure to breathe new life into this heritage building.

Houndsfield Primary School

Nominated for best use of slate for a commercial project

Replacing the original slate roof was only one part of the challenge at Houndsfield Primary School. With additional funding required through the Condition Improvement Fund to make the project possible, contractors Russell Trew Limited, played an instrumental role in detailing and costing every element of the project to submit a successful funding bid.

When it came to the roofing works, supply issues with traditional Welsh slate meant an alternative was required, making Cambrian Slate the ideal choice. Once installed across all 892sqm of roofspace, the Cambrian Slate delivered an appearance which sensitively celebrated the building’s heritage, while delivering uncompromising quality to create a first-class school environment.

Peabody Estate

Shortlisted for best use of slate for a domestic project, and sustainable project of the year

At a time when the UK is facing a housing crisis, social housing is playing a critical role – not in just providing homes for today, but ensuring they’re fit for the future. With this in mind, the Peabody Estate is on a mission to achieve net-zero carbon across its portfolio by 2050, making the roofs of each home an essential consideration.

Axe Roofing used Cambrian Slate to deliver on this, marrying critical performance with a traditional slate aesthetic to rejuvenate the ageing housing stock. As well as contributing to the project’s overall sustainability by using 60% recycled Welsh slate, Cambrian also prioritises performance to support the efficient performance of each home within the estate.

The Pitched Roofing Awards will be celebrated on 22 November at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.
