A brand new state of the art Science Park in Wales required a solution that could withstand high winds on the properties exposed position, and that met the aesthetics required from the brief.
This led to the development of a bespoke white Single-ply membrane using Monarplan FM from BMI Icopal.
Project name: Menai Science Parc
Contactor: Willmott Dixon
Sub contractor: Mac Roofing
The project won the Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) award for Best New Build 2018.
The BMI Technical support and specifications also helped the building achieve a BREAAM excellent rating.
The combination of high winds and a unique design caused challenges to the design and build of the project’s roof. The project’s location leaves it exposed to winds and the climate in Wales often involves other harsh weather conditions. Therefore the roof had to be designed to protect the building during these conditions, but also conform to the sleek design of the other parts of the building.
The project provides the first ever dedicated science park in Wales and features offices and a state of the art laboratory for up to 700 people, meaning the scale of the challenge was large, with the roof requiring a huge amount of materials.
The property is split into two parts, one of which is a stunning atrium, roofed with white BMI Icopal Monarplan FM.
The overall specification to the atrium comprised Micoral NB VCL, PIR Insulation and the white Monarplan FM membrane which was mechanically fixed. The sloping section of the roof was subject to high winds due to the site’s exposed position which meant BMI Icopal adhesives were also required for increased security. Membrane laps were created facing away from the building frontage creating a slope which appears to be joint-free.
Featuring both flat and sloping roofs, the main building was constructed with a metal deck. BMI Icopal’s bituminous VCL was installed with tapered insulation to provide falls to flat roof areas. For the finished effect, the architect wanted to create a building with stunning lines by using white Corian feature cladding and a white Single-ply membrane. This was achieved to spectacular effect using BMI Icopal Monarplan FM. with a white lacquered finish, created especially for this project, which looks stunning as the finished photography demonstrates.
The Mac Roofing team demonstrated high levels of workmanship throughout this unique project, not only through the installation of the roofs but also the provision of vertical cladding to the inner courtyard areas.
The BMI Technical support and specifications helped the building achieve a BREAAM excellent rating, the project also won the Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) award for Best New Build 2018.
Monarplan FM membrane is intended for use as an exposed membrane in mechanically fastened systems. It may also be used as the detailing sheet in conjunction with Monarplan GF Fleeceback membrane. Membranes should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.
